Wordpress if not configured correctly or rather, if configured incorrectly can cause lots of problems in terms of resource usage on your account.
The two main causes of excessive resource usage on Wordpress are:
1. Tables not being optimsed
2. Faulty plugins

For the basics though you need to have at least CACHING and DATABASE OPTIMSIATION at the very minimum. These two items alone will display significant performance on your web site, whilst keeping your reource usage within acceptable limits.

There are many plugins for this but the best ones in our opinion are:
WP SUPER CACHE
HYPER CACHE
MySQL Db Optimisation
Use phpMyAdmin to optimize your database by Logging in to phpMyAdmin, check all the tables, and then chose optimize table option. Or just use one of the folliwing plugins.
