You are viewing this article becasue you would like to add a new domain to yoru cpanel acount.
The Addon domain feature in cpanel allows you to run several websites from a single hosting account.
It also allows you to have independant ftp details for each add on domain. For example, add on domain name allows you to run several wordpress sites under the one hosting account.
When an addon domain is "added" to a "main" hosting account, a new folder is created in the main hosting accounts folder structure and an ftp login is created.
This gives the public appearance that the add on domain has its own hosting account, but internally its simply hosted under your "main" account in a sub folder. The subfolder name will usually be the same as the domain name it will be hosting.
Visitors to the add on domain would not know that the add on domain is...well....an add on domain, it would be assumed that it has its own hosting account and completely seperate from your main account.
UPSIDES OF ADD ON DOMAIN HOSTING
- saves money as there is no need to pay for multiple hosting accounts
- all files/websites are centralised under one account so easier to access and manage
- easier backup as all files are centralised under 1 back file
DOWNSIDES OF ADD ON DOMAIN HOSTING
- if you have lots of sites the hosting account can get quite large in size
- if the hosting account is hacked, the leak can possibly affect all sites in the whole hosting account
- not possible to easily move individual sites to other hosting companies
Here is how to add an "addon domain" to your cpanel hosting account.
