Quarantine of files containing suspicious code

Why have you removed some files without my permission? Now my site does not work!

The open nature of the internet means that 24/7/365 there are criminals whose sole purpose is to either:

  • steal your identity or your customer identities
  • steal credit card data or passwords
  • hack servers for profit or fun
So we understand completely the situation in this case and totally sympathise however we should mention that we actively scan all files on our servers for any malicious or suspicious code hidden within the vast array of files and if any is found, we move it over to a quarantine. Its very dangerous for all to leave the file in place if the file has been flagged.

How does malicious code get onto my hosting in the first place?
Usually what happens is that you will obtain some prewritten code which may contain obfuscated programming inside it. Wordpress is an excellent example of this.

Here is a scenario: You visit a site offering free wordpress themes. The themes look stunning and beautiful and have many helpful functions. So you download the free theme and install it into your Wordpress. However what you dont know is that the theme contains hidden code of a malicious nature.

Sometimes this code can be used to:
  • change permissions on your hosting account
  • attempt to traverse to the root of the server to steal server passwords
  • perform drive by installs on your web site visitors
So you see the issue that hidden code can bring. In some cases the vendor of a theme may hide his code to protect his intellectual copyright but we have found that almost all decent themes made by legitimate designers have no need to hide code within their themes.

So, if you are using a theme with hideen code in it, then beware that it may be malicious.
