Shared server space is a like being in a community and means that your web site works next to other web sites and the performace of your web site affects others residing on the same server.
Sometimes, users accounts can act in a manner so as to unintentionally (or not), use more resource than permitted in our Terms of Service.
In order to spot account on these shared servers who are over using resources outside the permitted range, we employ automated technologies which monitor the following:
1. how much cpu your account is using at any given time (see section 7a of TOS)
2. how many inodes are being used (see section 7b of TOS)
3. how long mysql scripts take to execute (see section 7a item 9 of TOS)
4. how many emails are being sent out (see email policy)
5. how long cron jobs are running (see section 7b item 8 of TOS)
For the most part we will usually issue a warning via email to your account on file with details of infractions. In severe abuse instances we will suspend immediately if the resource abuse is affecting other community users on the server.
Most commons causes of resource abuse are:
Wordpress - wordpress is heavy on mysql lookups. You need to ensure that if your site gets more than 250 visits a day, use caching of your pages. WP Super Cache is very good for this. Wordpress also has alot of plugins, mostly made open source by coders. These plugins can cause slow mysql queries.
MYSQL Optimisation - Mysql is an excellent database but if not optimised correctly can lead to lockups. Regularly optimise your database tables and ensure that all tables have indexes. Non indexed MySQL tables can lead to high resource usage.
Email Lists - despite offering the ability for you to send out emails, you are limited to 500 per hour. You must throttle your list sending to below this amount per hour or you will find that your account will be suspended.
